Jerry Lewis was fantastic |
Definition - Physical comedy is a form of comedy focused on manipulation of the body for a humorous affect. It can include slapstick, clowning, mime, physical stunts, or making funny faces. Physical comedy originated as part of the Commedia dell'arte.
The art of physical comedy is something I've loved forever. As a kid, growing up, watching Buster Keaton, The Three Stooges, Jerry Lewis, always captivated me. Watching these masters of prat falls and manipulation caught me eye and I always wanted to emulate their antics.
With my recent comedy web series "Acting with Andy", it certainly doesn't take any stretch of the imagination to see where the inspiration came from. Sometimes, its the fun, innocent things in life that can bring the brightest smiles. Physical comedy seems to be a lost art.
Lucy was a master at physical comedy |
In modern times, I think of guys like Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carrey and even Will Sasso are solid example of physical comedy. It still exists, plus still has an audience. I think it's evolved over time. I'm not sure if living in a reality TV world, physical comedy would have a large audience but it's still there.
How do you know it still works? Look at Lucy. Look at Jack Tripper (John Ritter) from Three's Company. These shows have longevity and people still watch them, all over the world. Why? Because its simple to follow and needs no words. Its fun.
I just wanted to write today that I love physical comedy and have, ever since I was younger and here I am, almost 46 years old and thinking "Hey, I want to bring this back in some aspect. Sure, I think a lot of people associate me with horror films and making darker projects, but I think I'm evolving as a writer and actor. I want to make you smile. I want to bring fun to the world. I hope you have a great day and thank you for spending time with me.
