"Every Other Day is Halloween" Review

Imagine being a little kid and sneaking down the stairs so as not to wake your parents so as not to wake them. It is way past your bedtime and the only thing on your mind is to watch your favorite late night horror show. You flip on the TV and crank the volume to low so as not to wake your parents, because if they find you up and out of your room you are going to be grounded for life. The TV screen warms up and a light fills the room from the TV to reveal the opening credits of Count Gore De Vol’s Creature Feature.

Remember the days of your local horror host? Whatever happened to them? Well, Every Other Day is Halloween by CW Prather, takes a look at an icon of horror hostingly epic proportions as he reunites us with the host with the most, Count Gore De Vol. He was a horror host based out of the Washington DC area for quite a number of years even with a small hiatus in between.

The documentary follows the man behind the Count, Mr. Dick Dyszel, who also portrayed Bozo the Clown and Captain 20 for the channel he worked on. It follows Mr. Dyszel through his past of all his characters till the ultimate and most memorable of that being the Count. He takes through the Counts creation as well as his ultimate demise due to the changing times of the culture.

He was ahead of his time and focused his late night horror routine on his target audience at the time which happened to be women and stoned out pot heads. Always a good mix of a target audience if you ask me, lol.  He is a simple down to earth type of guy that would be able to just hang out at a BBQ with or to grab a cup of coffee at a diner with. He is an entertaining character and person and it is understandable as to why his character was so appealing. He believed in what he was doing and the most important thing was that he had fun doing. So many people hate their jobs and wish they were doing something else, but Mr. Dyszel had fun doing what he loved, and for that I admire him.

His show embodied the era in which he lived and took shots at some of the political actions going on as well as embracing the sexual revolution sweeping the culture. He would have penthouse pets on and would make sly sexual innuendos while maintaining his Count Gore De Vol character the whole time, which embraced the aspect of Dracula and the power of sexual persuasion he had over women.

I loved this documentary because it showed the behind the scenes aspect to horror hosting as well as showing us how fun it can be. He doesn’t tell people to not become horror hosts, but actually encourages people to do what they love best. In a world where everyone is trying to protect their spot and be the best, it is a breath of fresh air to hear a legend say to do what you want to do. And I used the word legend because that is exactly what he is. He has inspired horror hosts from all over the country and quite possibly the world. As my partner Rob and I take on this new venture of our lives in trying to bring people the best in horror and comedy we can only aspire to be as good as the great Count Gore De Vol was and is.

This past weekend I had a chance to hang out at the National Haunters Convention (www.nationalhauntersconvention.com) In King of Prussia, PA over at the Valley Forge Convention Center. I actually worked a wrestling show there probably about 10 years ago, been forever, but I was looking forward to it. 

The Convention is typically for people who run Haunted House attractions but is open to everyone. From special effects, to performers, to vendors selling everything from spider web makers to brains in a jar (I actually bought one). I was amazed at how much stuff is out there, granted this was the first time I had attended one. It was like Christmas for me, scare and gore for everyone. If you enjoy Halloween, this should become a mandatory stop for you, seriously...tons of merchandise to grab.

I went with the intent on handing out our flyers for The Late Night at the Horror Hotel show (www.latenighthorrorhotel.com - cheap plug, I know) but first, sought out the co-promoter Michael. Mr. Bruner was gracious enough to help me out tremendously, plus in the conversation was glad to hear that he wanted John and myself there next year! Such a great way to start the day, couldn't ask for more.

I attended the convention with my daughter (Kimberly), who is my horror watching partner in crime and Camera Man Mike, who of course forgot the camera. Now, Camera man Mike is a huge nerd, much like myself. His sense of humor is unlike many I have ever been around. Once we get to the con, he is scoping things out and snooping around. While I am busy handing out flyers and talking to as many people as I can, he of course he finds the only guy selling Magic the gathering cards (if there is a fellow nerd in the place, Mike will find him). I must admit though, the guy we talked too was mentioning some sort of Dungeons and Dragons game, it sounded fun but was gonna happen way past my bed time.

We needed to grab some grub, since handing out flyers is tough work (smirk). We head to the mecca of mall shopping, the King of Prussia Mall for lunch. If you have never been there, it's like one of the biggest malls in the US, they have a Cinnabon and a Comic Shop..so I could live there, I think. The 3 of us go on our merry way to the food spot of our choice and we sit. Eating with Mike becomes fun about now, as he has 1 chicken sandwich and 4 things of hot sauce, where is the camera now? He proceeds to dump 2 of the packets of hot sauce on the sandwich, these weren't little packs either, and it's an instant mess. Then he has the other 2 for dipping, guess you can never have enough hot sauce. Of course, the boy wonder grabs NO NAPKINS and has sauce on his face, hands and now...on his pants from wiping it there.

Back to the Con we go, I think Mike was still enjoying his Hot Sauce from his pants and hands. I had woken up early that day and decided that I was gonna take pictures with people doing the Ultraman pose, not sure why, just felt like it would be fun. I start to grab people, from Freddy to whoever I could, just for the sake of the pictures. I think I will continue doing this, mostly everyone remembers Ultraman plus it's better than the standard smile or point. So, if you see me, grab me with a Ultraman pose...I'm such a dork, but come on...Ultraman is pretty cool..plus, apparently Freddy likes him.

I also had a chance to meet the Horror Hosting Icon, Count Gore De Vol and fellow Philly Horror Host, Roxsy Tyler. Both were super cool. The Count gave me some great advice and I couldn't have been happier having a chance to speak with him. I grabbed his Every Other Day is Halloween dvd a have a review, posted further down on this site. Highly recommended dvd, motivational too. Roxsy and I did a promo together too, was great to meet her and Potent Pictures! You can see by the picture, she was feeling the love for Ultraman! 

In closing it, was a great day...Kimberly got her Munsters Lunch Box, Camera Man Mike had messy pants and I was able to grab some very cool swag of my own. Hopefully, you guys enjoyed this and will continue to keep coming back and send me your pics in the Ultraman pose!! I wanna see them.

Every Other Day is Halloween DVD review

While at the National Haunters Convention, one of my main goals was to stop by and meet Count Gore De Vol. He was a class act and was willing to give pointers, take pictures and he even sold me his DVD!! His word of advice was "If you advertise something...never let down the viewers"...something I will listen to as the deadline for every show gets closer.

The Count is an inspiration for any of the Horror Hosts out there on public access, late night local network or even just on the internet. Beloved by many in the Washington DC area, not just as The Count but also as Captain 20 and Bozo the Clown. Dick Dyszel has managed to reach people's homes for almost as long as I have been alive. 

 Every Other Day is Halloween spans Dick Dyszel's career and includes the good times with the bad. Filled with tons of clips from all of his shows, it's very easy to see that he loves what he does. I think what I enjoyed was that he wasn't afraid to expose how hard it really is to make it in TV. The Internet has given everyone a voice, but I'm referring to working on a local station, dealing with the station being sold and the new bosses simply not "getting" your show.

The DVD is packed with plenty of Interviews, not just by Dyszel, but guys like Karlos Borloff, who is another DC/Virgina Horror Host. Borloff, who really shows how much Dyszel means to him, following his career for many, many years, even has him on The Monster Madhouse, Borloff's successful Horror show. 

Plus reviews from Dr. Sarcofiguy, Arch Campbell, Steve Niles (creator of 30 Days of Nights plus countless other comics) and many, many more. The key to this, for me, was the emotion and following that the Count Gore De Vol character gained by the fans. People grew up watching him, not just once a day, sometimes 2-3 times a day as different characters. The films has heart and shows that some good guys, finish First.

 I HIGHLY recommend this film for anyone who struggles to wonder..."why am doing this". If you are an actor, Dyszel shows perseverance, battling numerous fights to be your Host of "Creature Feature", throughout his career.
