Tiny House - Could We Make It?

Tiny House - Could We Make It?

The last few weeks, Kim and I have been watching a lot of the Tiny House shows on television. Since I've given up mostly on all TV shows, we have time. We've been wondering...could we do it? When I mention this to others, they simply say NO, but this makes me think that they don't know us too well.

Let's catch you up to speed on what a Tiny House is. Imagine living in 300 square feet. Having all your worldly possessions gone with just a few things left to make you happy. Every nook and cranny of this space is completely used. Walking away from all you've been learned to make life simpler and more importantly, gaining financial freedom while doing it.

Let's look at this a little more serious:

Cost - well, depending on what you want, cost can get up there but let's figure on numbers we've mostly seen for something that will satisfy Kim and I. This number, typically is around $35,000 (this is based on the shows we watch). Look at your house now. Whats the worth? How much are you paying to live this way? Obviously you need a lot, land or a place to drop this tiny house, so factor in this cost also. For water and power (depending if you're using solar panels, which we would) you figure roughly another $100-$200 for a lot or mortgage on a property. The wheels are a big part, because it's mobile and not a permanent fixture, so the land zoning issues are avoided. You will want running water, so you need to come up with a plan for this. Sure, environmentally based toilets are available as are ways to catch rain water and clean it for drinking. If you really wanted to "rough it" you could. We aren't looking to do that. We just know in 8-10 years, we will want to enjoy our later years and simplicity is the way.

Space - this is huge, well..not really. Once our kids move out, it will be Kim and I, as most of our animals are already later in their years, sadly. So how much space is enough? Great question. I can't imagine me being 60 yrs old, wanting to crawl into some tiny space to sleep or in a loft. So we need sleeping space. We need replacing space too. We could do without a tub, so a shower is just fine. A small kitchen is also great, as Kim and I do cook a lot, we hardly use a microwave or need multiple stove burners going. Clothes? Well, I don't have a big problem with this, but Kim does. Kim loves her clothes but I think she would be ok with letting a lot go. A nice deck with a small roof, compete with a grill would also help. We wouldn't be opposed to a small shed (in back of the house) to use seasonally, you know for coats, decorations or whatever too.

Being financially comfortable - This is the biggie. Wouldn't it be nice to be close to retired and actually have money? Imagine what you're paying now and your cost shrinks for living down to $150-300 per month...total!! I know Kim and I want to travel, we want to spoil our grandkids, we want to be able to enjoy ourselves and live life. I will be 45 yrs old in a month, so in 8 yrs, I'll be hitting my prime...haha. This is what makes this the most appealing, more than anything else.

Let's look at this from another angle. Society is breaking down, weather you want to believe it or not. I struggle everyday to even just go to the store as dealing with rude and obnoxious behavior just is expected now. People have 0 manners. Kids are terrible (maybe I'm sounding like a cranky old man) and parents will not enforce rights from wrongs. Parents pass the blame and expect teachers or the TV to raise their kids. So, does moving away from cramped areas really sound that bad now? I don't need to move to the middle of no where but moving 30 mins from town wouldn't be the worst thing. Smelling fresh air, being able to live and have some elbow room would be great (plus I'm only gonna get crankier).

Anyways, this is our dream, regardless of how Tiny it is. Don't worry, you'll all be invited to our yard sale. Unplug, go be social and love the ones you're with.

Keeping Positive & Some Advice?

Keeping Positive & Some Advice?

Trust me, before we even start, it's impossible to always be positive. Life throws some serious curve balls and sometimes you will feel abandoned, alone or betrayed. It's during those moments that we all have to mourn and move on and realize the sun does rise and shine another day. I wanted to offer some things that I do or have done to help me keep a fresh outlook:

Start eating better - Food...this can alter your mood dramatically. Eating healthy can clear your mind and help creativity. I have more energy, sleep better and notice I want to write more. Its amazing how once I cut all the processed foods and fast food garbage out of my diet, things became clear and less cloudy. Sure, you have to indulge and eat some crap sometimes but the benefits outweigh the "cravings". When eating bad, I wrote less, moved less and wanted to sleep more. Now I want to create and have fun. It works..I promise.

Stop watching the news - Ok, sure we all need the news in our life but trust me when I say this...most of the news is trash. I don't care about these other families or most of the TMZ style news reporting, I care more about my own family and whats good in my own community. Fear and controversy equal ratings...positivity does not. Its the truth. So stay away from the news, or watch what really matters. You'll be happier you did. Go for a walk, go enjoy the sunshine and live your life.

Choose better friends & limit Social Networking - Yep, coming from someone who claims to be a social networking guru, I am in fact telling you to limit social media. For many its an obsession and at times, I fall into the same trap, but I now seem to post and walk away. I post less, interact less and spend more time with my family. People don't really care what you're eating, doing or hanging with. They care if YOU care what THEY are doing. Hey, someone has to tell you the truth. I go on in the morning, maybe around lunch and then at night. Typically, unless someone messages me or posts on my wall, I don't see much anymore.

Go Outside - Go outside, go for a walk and enjoy the air. Regardless where you live, you can get yourself to a nice park. Sit outside and clear your mind, let the natural vitamins help you and refresh you. Sitting inside can lead to boredom, sleep, snacking, being lazy. Even if you're sitting on a bench, next to a nice lake, surrounded by natural surrounding, you will be happier. It's amazing what just some fresh air can do. I've started to walk around my town and taking the longest way, actually getting some sort of work out, by just being active. I've noticed I started taking pictures and learning more about our town...been here for 17 years and learning more now than ever.

Anyways, those are some tips that help me...they might not help you, but I wanted to exercise my brain by writing and doing something. Now, I'll eat a lunch and then head out for the day. Enjoy life, its the only one we get!

Never forget who you are.

Never forget who you are.

Never forget who you are. Over time I've learned who I am. Like everyone I have faults. I'm abrasive,  not an ass kisser, outspoken but I'm genuine and I will always go out of my way to give someone credit they deserve.

Sometimes people mistaken hate for being a realist. Sometimes you have to cut the cord with some as they prove themselves to be an opportunist. Life is, sadly, sometimes about who you know over what you know. As a filmmaker I should be more of a "politic". I can politic with the best of them, admittedly, but a bad connect is a bad connection.

My goal is to give props to every person who does great. To avoid those who just follow...look to your goal...YOUR goal...and grab it. Learn to be independent and accept disappointment..it's life. Enjoy the roller coaster of experience.

This week on Rob Dimension's Shock and Wrestling Podcast, Rob and Matt start the show by discussing some of the notorious disturbing films in Horror, both Underground and wider commercially released. Then the conversation switches to Q'doba, The Office and finally some wrestling chatter.

Probably a more in-depth look at what these two really talk about on a daily basis.

TvLand kicks it to the Curb

TvLand kicks it to the Curb

This past weekend, TvLand started to run the Larry David sitcom show, Curb Your Enthusiasm. For me, it's crazy that after 8 seasons, this show will grab an entire new audience. Those that loved Seinfeld, will love this show too.

Being a Seinfeld fanatic, once HBO originally announced Curb, being helmed by Seinfeld creator Larry David, it was a must watch for me. On Seinfeld, the character George Costanza was written around Larry David, even though the show itself was a basis of some of David's real life escapades and adventures.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is part sitcom, part improv and part sheer craziness. The Larry David character has no filter, can't let things go and has a constant problem with being in the middle of a bad situation. I guess the genius of the show is it's not that far from reality. We all hate lending items out, we tend to lack social skills and we all handle things badly at times...well, that's what is typically premise for each 30 minute episode. From have a "Pants Tent", that your Wife's best friend thinks is a boner to a reunion of sorts for the cast of Seinfeld. Larry takes in a family misplaced from Katrina, his marriage to Cheryl has ups and downs and his professional life meet issues with his manager, Jeff, his wife Susie, his friends and his celebrity run ins are always awesome.

Now, with that being said, this show will not cater to everyone. Yes, plus being on TvLand, the show at times, is edited but nothing that you can't look past. For me, it's still funny and to relive the series makes late night battles with insomnia, not so bad. The show is on most last nights (set your dvr) usually 11pm or later, but it's well worth a watch.

The show is currently on hiatus from it's new season, scheduled to be rumored for a shooting start in the Fall. The seasons are all available to purchase for usually around $20-$25 and have a high re-watchability. So, if you're watching late at night, make sure you tweet to @TvLand and Me and use the hashtag #CurbYourEnthusiasm and let's talk!

It's a story of pain, depression and discovery. I talk openly about suffering from depression and fighting back. Here are the interviews...enjoy!

Once again, thank you to those who have reached out.
