Baggage Diary #2 (May 21, 2013)

Baggage Diary #2 (May 21, 2013)

I sit here...feeling accomplished, sore, tired and the most proud possible. After a grueling two day shoot in Long Branch, New Jersey, "baggage" is officially under way. We were met with bad weather but the greatest crew and cast you could ask for. Positivity and motivation really was strong on set.

Let's look at the weekend:

Friday night, Kim, Lil Dimension and myself head to the Jersey shore with the hopes and dreams in our hearts (yes..this is the set up for defeat..haha) and we arrived at the "Less than Happy Hotel". We had reserved our rooms online only to be told "we don't honor those prices"....so, after a little "discussion"...we finally get our room. Well, as if a black cloud wasn't hovering enough after our check in....the cloud settled right above my head upon entering the room.

After years of being on the road, hotel rooms need to be real skanky to freak me out....and between us..I was kind of freaking out. Kim and I walk in...look around and walk into the bathroom...no shower curtain. We call the desk...phone doesn't work. We walk to the office and she moves us to another room, reluctantly....apparently, I'm look like a liar (I probably do). Next room, I go right to the bathroom..."Look honey, a shower curtain!!" I say in excitement, only to look at the toilet and see a sign "to be removed by plumber"...yep..potty don't work.  So back to the office we go. Third room....smells like mildew but we are stuck. Stay here of sleep in the car. So, we decide to stay.

Next morning, we are off to the set!!

Jerry and Rob
Saturday was a bit of a easy day since we had an indoor shoot at an office (Mortgage Now in Shrewsberry, NJ) and then a train station location that had a little cover. It was raining and not our ideal weather, but we were gonna make it work. Our cast and crew got set and the day is underway. I won't say much about each location but I will say this...when Jeremiah Kipp, the director calls for a "Taxi Driver-esque" shot...Jeff, the cinematographer and I looked at each other and smiled. For each of us, it's one of the films we used as a model for this project...so Jeremiah literally made our day.

After about eight hours at that spot...we pressed ahead to the Elberon train station. The train station is small and very visual. I love it. We meet up with the extra's that were extremely patient and here is an interesting tidbit of trivia...almost all the extra's at the train station had Mumbles the Clown tattoo's!!! It wasn't designed this way, but it just happened.

The weather was shitty; no one word really can describe it. On a positive spin, it really helps set the mood for the film. Keep in mind, we wanted the train arriving in the shot so we ran to both sides of the tracks to get the shots we needed. It was a full day that involved laughs, great times and memories that we can all remember. Special Thank you to everyone who was a part of Saturday.

After about 8pm we were finally done....until 7:30am on Sunday.

Mumbles tattoo's!!!
Here is my tip to any writers out there....if you aren't in shape, do NOT write a chase scene..but, more on that in a minute. It was raining again and we were shooting at the Draft House in Long Branch, NJ. If you've never been there...go!! It's got a super clean and has a great atmosphere, plus amazing food. Can't thank them enough for allowing us to invade their space for the morning. We were really pressed for time but this scene was extremely important so we needed really good coverage. Once again, this is where having a great crew really helps...everyone listens, talks and offers ideas...it's like the perfect crew..seriously. Once again, thank you to all the extras that came out in the miserable weather and hung out for a while.

Now...it was time for the chase on the streets on Long Branch. I'm not in shape..plus, the shoes I was wearing are not made for running. Add slick cement to the mix and we have a recipe for disaster. This was easily the toughest shoot I've ever done. Being chased by two 20 somethings was a challenge; especially since I refuse to admit defeat and never want to quit....I'm still limping..haha.

We then move back to Elberon train station for the face off. This was also tough but I know it's going to be amazing. This scene had physicality, emotion and intensity. It's always weird when you see what you've written come to life and it exceeds your expectations and the visuals become so much more than you could've imagined. There is nothing better than sharing a moment that you open yourself up, show tremendous emotion and know that those around you are rooting for you and are feeling the emotion. It's really moving.

I never claim to be an actor...but in that tunnel...as I sat on the ground...wet, sore and beaten...even if it was just for one small moment in time, I was proud of my performance. I'm so proud of what we've done thus far.

Let me say this...I can't thank each and every person who have made this possible. Jeremiah, Jeff, Steve, Bill, Deirdre, Paul, Kristen, lil Dimension, Sal, the people who offered us the locations, every single extra that was a part of it, every person that donated or even shared the link and most of all, my Wife, Kim...without her, I would have never have taken these chances or risks..I owe her more than she even realizes.

This weekend we film more extremely tough scenes and I will write more next week about how it went. I thank you for following along and being a part of this. Independent filmmaking can feel very lonely at times, but it's times like this, that makes you realize you are not alone.

Accomplishments comes in many forms.

Accomplishment comes in many forms.

I ended that title with a period because I believe it's a statement, not necessarily a title. Each day in each of our lives, we each make our own accomplishments. Regardless of how small or even, how big, we can see a positive in ourselves.

What a difference a year makes. The other day I had a moment of clarity, I sent my pal, Steve Corino, a text message "Hey, just wanted to thank you for helping me through the shittiest time of my life." It was random, out of the blue and his response "You're welcome". I have exposed my personal life online and on our Podcast "XOC Podcast" with the hopes that maybe it would help someone else who was struggling. My struggle came from within. I hit 40 and was a depressed mess. My family was almost lost, my life was almost lost...I had no direction.

A change needed to be made; I sat down on my laptop and wrote No Clowning Around. It was a short horror/drama film that is full of personal metaphors. Its an inner battle, a battle that I decided to stand up against. I am, in no way, any spokesperson for depression, I just realized if I wanted my life better, I needed to make it happen...no one else would do it.

The saying "What a difference a year makes" has never rang so true for me. Yesterday, I went to pick up the final edit of No Clowning Around; a movie that everyone involved, believed in, worked hard on and gave their heart too. It was a lonely hour and a half ride home as the Dvd sat on my passenger seat. It stared at me; it made me doubt myself, it made me anxious, nervous and made me feel exposed.

I pulled up to my house and sat out front, just thinking. Thinking of the journey, I can only assume it would be like seeing the finish line of a marathon, but since I'm a lazy turd, I can only assume. I unlocked my door, walked in and of course, I had too pee, since I suffer from Old Man Bladder, but quickly gave it a shake and headed to my Dvd player. As the menu appeared, I could only feel excitement build.

I sat and watched for the next 30 minutes, enjoying something I had helped create. For many, the metaphors will go unseen, but I created this for me. It was me taking my life back. It was me taking a stand against the demons that try to poison our mind, it was that moment in my life that I will never forget.  Even as I type this, I'm teary eyed. The feeling was similar to seeing my children for the first time, it was a overwhelming mix of emotions.

As the movie progressed, I began to have tears stream down my cheeks, but for once, it wasn't because of disappointment or self doubt, it was because I was proud. It was an accomplishment. I reached a goal and no one will ever take that away from me. Sure, the movie will go unseen by many, some will think its shitty, but there will be a few that will enjoy it. I look back at this as a monumental moment in my life. People make movies everyday, people accomplish goals everyday but, it's up to YOU to recognize that moment. You have to work for it.

I am no motivational speaker, I'm only someone who stood on the edge and didn't jump. As the weekend approaches, let me encourage you - take a minute for yourself and make yourself better. Let the negativity go...work hard, if for nothing else, for just YOU. You control your outlook on life, everyone gets in a rut, take your life back. Be the best you can be...accomplish YOUR goal today. Don't worry about the haters...they hate because they are scared to risk being successful. Success is in your heart.

Thank you to those who believed in me, you made this possible.

New Years Resolutions already?

New Years Resolutions already?

Thanksgiving has passed, Christmas cheer is looming in the faint distance and another year is upon us. First, let's put to rest the idea of the world ending; here is a tweet  that explains my feelings on the subject:

Was asked "What you gonna do before the World ends?" My response "Block, unfriend & unfollow every asshole who thinks the world is ending."

Hopefully, that sums up my "End of the World" plans. Regardless of what the Mayans have led us to believe, my guess is the calendar guy was laid off due to down sizing because of outsourcing. Just in case, I have been Dvr'ing Doomsday Preppers...

Back to the question: New Years Resolutions. Each year, Americans fill their heads with countless "Turns of a new leaf" to better themselves from being the over-weight, lazy, cheating people they are...I'm no different. "I'm going to enroll in a gym, gonna eat better and lose these 30 pounds", that's what plans I'm already making; knowing damn well, I will cancel the gym membership by March, eat like an asshole on New Years Day and the scale will remain unaffected. We all fall for that trap. After working in a gym, is it any shock that a majority of the money they make is from people who NEVER go!! That's right, they bank on you signing up and never canceling because of the guilt...luckily, I have no shame or guilt, so I cancel.

Professionally, I have some projects I want to push forward with for 2013; I want to start a web series. My film "No Clowning Around" basically rings in the New Year, releasing on Dec. 28th, so I will be attending and entering as many Film Festivals as possible. I also have plans on a sequel for No Clowning Around, but that depends on the reaction the film gets. I would also love to write a comedy, be it a short or a feature. Then there is the "This is the year" promise I make too myself - This year I will attempt Stand Up.

Let me explain my Stand Up philosophy - Stand Up is an art form that rests solely on the performers shoulders. It's you and a microphone vs the audience. It requires no lazy friends who all "want to help" then NEVER follow through (I know a lot of creative people who are lazy assholes that never want to leave their houses..it's sad but true). For me, it's an extension of what I do everyday. Writing, observing or even tweeting dumb thoughts that, at least, make me laugh.

So, will this be the year for me to elevate myself or will I continue to write these blogs that are read by 31 people, between the ages of 18-46 in the North American region? What dreams do you have for the new year? You have a month left to figure it out. Good luck and walk away from this with a simple life lesson - "Watch where you walk, there is shit everywhere".

Girl Dies on Video! Prank gone wrong!!

Girl Dies on Video! Prank gone wrong!!

OK, so now we have your attention...I'm always a fan of how much controversy arises about Real vs. Fake viral videos. YouTube, the monster video distributor that graces us with the funny to the dumb, to well, this little charm.

Take 4 minutes and watch this video.

OK, so you watched the video and now you're thinking "Rob, you bastard!!" That poor girl!" Calm down, it's just make believe. The above video is a short film titled "Exhibit B-5" from Newborn Pictures in California. I was completely blown away by this film, the realism and the freak chance it could be real.

Let's look at the facts people...YouTube will NOT condone or post anything that is real in regards to "snuff" of anything involving real death. Sure, we see these horrendous accidents, but we never know if those involved, actually die. I've watched Tosh.0 and actually seen a video where someone died from the result.

Do you feel cheated now? Here is some background on the film makers and those involved. Newborn Pictures (http://www.newbornpix.com) is operated by two very talented film makers Kyle Rankin and Efram Potelle. Regardless of anything posted about this...it's completely fake. My hat is tipped to these guys..seriously. They went above and beyond to make something seem so real that the Internet has written about this for nearly 2 years now, and here I am, still writing about it.

I think my love for this stems from being duped by the Blair Witch Project so many years ago. They elaborate set up by the film makers to fool us...you have to remember the internet wasn't anything like it is now. That was 1999 and the legend was out there, once I walked into the theater, they had me, hook line and sinker. I still classify the Blair Witch Project as one of the most inspirational films for me, it made "POV" film making (or Shaky Cam) a pivotal role in the Horror genre plus, even my favorite show "The Office" uses that filming style.

My advice for the day "Things aren't always as they seem".
