Over this past weekend, I attended a surprise Birthday party and I sat and mingled with a diverse group of people. Fellow actors, office people, spouses, editors and just random people, all walks of life. Interestingly enough, it was held at the Red Bank Elks Lodge...yep...2 blocks down from the Secret Stash.

The Secret Stash is the comic book shop that is showcased on the AMC show, Comic Book Men. It's been featured in Kevin Smith's ViewAskew Universe on film, talked about on his podcast network (Smod Co) and flocked too by the masses of Smith's nerds. The "Stash" is full of movie memorabilia; it's a shrine to films that spawned from the Independents. Kevin Smith has lead the way and made being a nerd cool....at least for me. Plus, you have to hand it to him, the guy takes care of his friends and shows loyalty...a RARE thing.

Anyways...back to the story...

So, someone says "congrats on your short film, heard great things." I've never been good with compliments...ever. I'm always sort of embarrassed but extremely thankful that someone is actually thinking a positive about me...especially since from my view point, I'm really struggling to make headway. I hardly ever see the positives...I always want to be better. Then they ask "so, what's next...?"

I'm gonna put a pause here...because in my head..there is a pause..

I start to tell the table about my plans, because by now...everyone is kind of staring at me. They are waiting for my response. I talk about my next short film titled "baggage", plus the idea of shooting a short comedy film. Then I mention the web series I'm in the middle of developing, that will start rolling in the summer..(here's a tidbit - it will be about film..not a review show, but insight and how to's). I talk about how I love to write and I'm working on a book...I talk about podcasting...and by this time, I feel like..."who is still listening?"

All of a sudden...I hear this "You're like the poor man's Kevin Smith"...now, for those that know me, I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan..if anything, the dude is my idol. So, I sit for a second, kind of shake it off and say "nah, he's got a lot going for him...I'm just a small town guy." Dinner continues and I don't think back about the comment and enjoy the baked ziti and grub the cake. 

My Wife, Kim, on the ride home notices I'm quiet and asks where am I. I just answer that I'm thinking ahead for this week's premier of No Clowning Around at Monster-Mania. I express that this is a make or break weekend for me. I know I'm new to the film making game but I feel like I'm carrying a lot of pressure. She then says "You know...you're gonna be great." I love how she gives me the extra confidence and pushes me to better. 

Poor man's Kevin Smith or not...this coming weekend, I push and work harder than I ever have. I look at this as the greatest opportunity I've ever had. I have to take the bull by the horns and make it matter. I want you to leave Monster-Mania, having an amazing weekend...but in the back of your mind..I hope there is a glimmer that creates an awareness that I am out there...trying to make good.

No Clowning Around plays at 1pm on Saturday, March 9th. The screening will be in Grand Ballroom C and a short Q&A will follow.

This week, Philadelphia Horror Host, Rob Dimension (who seems to excel in the Horrible dept.) is back with his "very own Hoss", Big Sal of "ECW Pro Wrestling" fame and Official Zombie master of the show, Sal Valente as they discuss "Horror in Print" and if Horror Magazines can survive or will they fall by the way side. They also talk advertising rates, the overall aspect of dealing in print media and what exactly does the $$$ buy you.

Dimension gives Sal (in imaginary money) a $500 budget to advertise the show, where will he spend it? This might interest those who are looking for learn some creative and fun ideas to help "spread the word" on a limited budget. How would you spend it?

 Plus Rob discusses the Brian Johnson's (Steve Dave from the View Askew Universe) 2000 film "Vulgar", that stars Clerk's star, Brian O'Halloran. With the release of Red State, this borders on the edge of horror for the View Askew guys...well Real Life Horror, at least.

They also give you their best 5 minutes for the Walking Dead Season 2 premiere that gained a whopping 11 million viewers. Are Zombies here to stay? Looks that way...atleast for a bit. Plus, hear what George Romero has to say about The Walking Dead and get our opinions.

Sal reviews "High School of the Dead" as his Netflix pick, a zombie filled, fun anime series that is currently streaming online now. The guys also deliver plenty of Horror news from the Independents to what is coming to a theater near you. My Quest to Interview Film Maker, Kevin Smith

As we close in on another year, I was told as a Golden rule, to set some goals. In the latest Mooch Minute, I named several future goals I would like to reach, but left one out, something that I will call “My Quest”.

Quest - [noun] a search for an alternative that meets cognitive criteria; "the pursuit of love"; "life is more than the pursuance of fame"; "a quest for wealth"

I figured, in case you we unsure of the meaning of Quest a definition would help. While many would simply say, “Rob, is it really a quest?” Most would probably think that this might be a passing request or something that could be as easy as an email request (already did that); handled behind the scenes...I am here to enlighten you on the reason for “The Quest”.

Kevin Smith, the man behind such cult classics like Clerks 1&2, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Chasing Amy and even Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He has shown that the everyday, average Joe can make it. Many find inspirations in various spots like paintings, poetry, movies. For me, it’s sometimes what other achieve is the greatest inspiration…for me, Kevin Smith has cracked the code for geeks worldwide, has reached his goal and continues to look for more.

Smith, originally known for his foul mouthed, View Askew Universe comedies is becoming someone who shares his life on many levels and proves self Humor can be the key to continued success. This is the same Kevin Smith who pokes fun at himself for his weight problems, films that have been considered bombs and goes as far to document his love affair for Fleshlights. While honesty is supposedly the best policy (at least that’s what we have been told our entire lives) so few actually follow this in modern life.

Each week, I will document on film, through pictures and on the podcast my Quest to meet and interview Kevin Smith. With Smith releasing Red State, the timing is perfect for me; I report and review Horror Movies!! As most know, I’m a Smith follower, so was no surprise when I scooped every site with the release of the Red State trailer. Smith has been releasing images weekly via his twitter auctions and random tidbits on his podcasts.

The plot revolves around a group of kids as they encounter a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church), who gives a whole new meaning to the term "extreme fundamentalism."

Stepping out of the View Askew universe and into Horror is exciting for me, I am looking forward to seeing the end result.

Mooch Minute 12/23/10 - Angry Shoppers & On Your List

Tis the season to be grumpy...wow, so the Mooch took his little ones to the mall last night. I am always shocked by people's anger around the holidays, I mean..I am angry all the time, it's not seasonal. From the loss of the common "Thank you" and " Excuse me" to just being downright shitty. I think the best way to look at the Holidays is : If you are pissed that you have to give gifts, then don't give them. It's that simple. Gift giving is a way to show thanks, admiration or out of friendship.

Mooch thought - if you are heading out shopping between now and Christmas eve...up until 5pm or whenever the store closes, be nice. Remember the people working have lives, the other shoppers are feeling the pinch, just like you. Take the extra second and say "Thanks" or "Excuse me"...just how I recognized that those people didn't...maybe someone will recognize that you did!

What's on your list? For the Mooch...it's gonna be a very Smchistmas..if that's even pronouncable. When we made the recent trip over to Kevin Smith's comic shop in Red Bank, NJ...Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, I grabbed a bunch of stuff for Christmas...not just for me, but for the entire family.

Whats crazy...I will head over again and grab some more stuff. I actually want to Clerks X dvd set, the 10 year anniversary release..I only see it over there...plus I still want a Mooby's Sweatshirt, I am a big fan of Clerks 2. I know, crazy stuff...what can I say...the dude's an inspiration for someone like me - this is how I see myself (not self loathing at all either, just realistic) - I am a new film maker, I will call myself that...I write about what I know and involve my friends and instead of just talking about it...I'm doing it.

Not sure if another Mooch Minute will be up before Christmas but if not - Merry Christmas to all

Well, interest has been high about the new show...which is great. I guess from my stand point, the nerves are starting to twitch, you know...the bubble guts.

When we started Late Night at the Horror Hotel we had nothing to lose, we were new so failure would be easy to accept. Not that we are popular, award winning or even winners at this point, but we still made some waves since March. This time around, we are doing something much different, so I look at it as a bigger challenge. We are working on this new show, writing, directing and editing is all on us.

Lately, I feel like I have been on Kevin Smith overload, hey....we each find our own motivation differently. His style of films, from jokes to content just fit my current mindset. While writing, I look for the potty humor, the things that people over look and what doesn't matter to almost everyone...matters to me. Kinda weird, could be me hitting 40 this year, but my train of thought seems to be reverting backwards...haha. Very childish.

Anyways, as we embark on another weekend of filming....let's see where this road leads us. Hopefully, anyone that enjoyed Late Night will now take a look at NecroCOMICon.....we are trying to give you something different, yet fimilar...if that makes sense.

For those that know me personally, I am a big time Kevin Smith fan. From his marketing, to his writing, his films and yes, even his acting...hey, not everyone can be Silent Bob. He is a nerd and I can relate, the passion he has for all things FanBoy, is just fantastic.

I load up the Moochmobile and head over to Red Bank, NJ for a much needed trip to Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash and since I knew I would be thirsty, I should stop at the Quick Stop. Both locations have grown a cult following having appeared in the Clerks films, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back and a few others (I don't need to run down the list cause you know them all).

First stop ... Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash right in the heart of Red Bank, NJ. I live on the outskirts of Philly, so the ride for me was about 1hr and 20 mins. Not a bad ride, Turnpikes and Garden State Parkway, the latter being a huge rip off, but that's another story all together. Red Bank is a nice, clean little town. When you pull up, you will have to pay the meters to park. It runs a $1 per hour, so bring your quarters.

 Let's face it, unless you live here, your not coming here to buy comics...your coming here to buy some View Askew swag and look at the memoriblia, well don't worry there is plenty! From the 5ft Buddy Christ (as seen above) to everything else like Silent Bob's coat, Clerks 2 outfits, a large Mooby and even the actual Quick Stop sign. Take your time and look around. They have done their best to lay everything out and there is plenty to see.

Me, being the big nerd for this stuff, just had a field day looking around and shopping. Since I enjoy comics, I loved the atmosphere at the Secret Stash.  If you want anything autograhed, never fear, there is TONS of stuff auto'd, from $4 comics by Smith to the inAction figures. Plus, a HUGE selection of t-shirts, sweatshirts and yes, you can buy you very own Mooby's employee shirt. The prices on everything are reasonable, most t-shirts run $20 and the sweatshirts run approx $40-50. What did I buy you ask? Well, I had noticed a figure on the site http://www.jayandsilentbob.com/ , the Night of the Living Kev inAction figure, so it was my quest...being a horror nerd, it made sense...plus, the bonus, it was signed....see below. Great place to stop and shop, if you can't make it, the website has tons of stuff and even offers discounts.

Next stop was the most know convenience store on the planet, the good ole Quick Stop that our favorite dealers, Jay and Silent Bob hang in front of. Plus, let's not forget the pure genuis that Dante and Randall pull off inside. Part of me was hoping to catch a glimpse of Leonardo Leonardo, but that wasn't gonna happen.

Traveling distance is about 15 minutes from the Secret Stash to the Quick Stop. The Quick Stop has changes colors, from the dirty white to now a sandy colored orange....must say, I wasn't a fan, but they are a business. The biggest part of the little mini strip mall (the building can actually house 4 businesses including the Quick Stop) is that everything is closed, excect for the Quick Stop.

The saddest part was seeing that RST Video is just a shell now. While the store still has TONS of videos..yes, videos sitting all over, it looks like it is used for storage now. The Quick Stop does have a few videos for sale, but at $5 each, unless they had a video nasty big box, I wasn't dropping a fin.

I did venture inside the Quick Stop, hoping to be greeted with a smart ass comment, see a guidance counselor testing eggs or even hear some Star Wars discussions happening...but, instead it was just some poor hapless joe doing his 9-5 job. No colorful characters hanging out front, no sheet hanging out front with "I assure you, were open" but I did have a smile on my face, just thinking about all the lines that have become a part of everyday life.....who hasn't thought "I'm not even supposed to be here today"

I still felt the trip was worth it and would HIGHLY recommend if you are a fan of these films, to make the trip....you will be glad you did. Plus, you never know what kind of rift raft, shady character you might see leaning outfront on the wall.
