Randy the Ram is a piece of Sh*t

Maybe I'm just hyper sensitive after spending 16 years in the world of professional wrestling, but man, I watched The Wrestler yesterday and thought to myself "Randy the Ram is a real A-Hole". Now, its been a while since I've watched the Darren Aronofsky cult indie film The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke. It happened to be playing on HBO and I turned it on and it really hit home.


Let me clear the air, in all honesty, I really like this movie but this is just a rant about how damn good of a written character Randy the Ram is, and really how great Rourke portrays him. I remember first seeing this movie and thinking about how relatable the character is to some people I know. I hate how poorly professional wrestling is portrayed by most films, well except Ready to Rumble, but even that, Jimmy King was a bum.

Ok, so let's look at what makes up such a miserable piece of shit like Randy the Ram:

Horrible Father - Ok, midway through the movie, Randy (Robin as his birth name) develops a heart and wants to rehab his relationship with his daughter. This relationship is rocky and she even let's him know that he is, in fact, a piece of shit. In the end, he chooses himself over her and that bridge is burnt.

Selfishness - Yep, as an entertainer/wrestler, Randy is a selfish bastard. He loves the limelight. Sure, his best days are behind him and now he is forced to shill his name value to small, shitty independent feds. Randy, only knowing wrestling as his life style is a constant worker in this film, from not walking away to lying about his health, potentially dying in the ring. You almost want to feel bad for him but I've seen this person, many times within wrestling. In his eyes, he has nothing to live for but the cheers and while you might think "awe man, he loves us", he doesn't. This is part of his selfishness.


Junkie - Ok, while you might think, "he really only did some steroids", the list of shit he put into his body was staggering. Not to mention recreationally doing drugs and probably a borderline alcoholic, Randy does all kinds of growth hormones but draws the line at "that Chinese shit". Again, I know people and have lost friends who are JUST like this!! Aronofsky really did his homework and it hurts a little to watch.


Whore - Randy is a whore. He is obsessed with Marisa Tomei who portrays a stripper, but unlike Randy, she is trying to get out to make a better life for her and her son. The Ram is a part of the sickness and can not escape. He hates everything in his life except wrestling.


Now that I have dismantled Randy the Ram, remember, I truly do like this movie. This was me picking apart the character design and honestly admiring, not only the realism but the portrayal. This movie has you glued from the start to the finish....

Speaking of the finish...I'm always curious what YOU think happened? Remember, Randy climbs to the top rope, about to deliver the Ram Jam on the Ayatollah and while he is looking around, right as he jumps....we go black. Did he win and live happily ever after? Did he die and leave his mark on wrestling for dying in the ROH ring? You tell me what You think.

Pro Wrestling - Learning to Edit Your Own Promos

Hey guys, I came across a story today that WWE had brought in an acting coach into NXT (their developmental program). This speaks volumes to me as someone within the entertainment industry. WWE knows exactly what they are doing...sure..we can all complain about their lazy booking at times but let's face facts: They are always gravitating more towards entertainment and less on wrestling. Sadly, for some of us who love the sport based on what we grew up on, this pales in comparison to our memories but its the hard fact. 

I wanted to discuss something that you can do, as an performer, is learning the simple basics of filming your own promos. Without getting into the rules I tend to stick with about the actual promo itself, let's discuss some methods to make your promo better.

Often you're asked to provide a promo before appearing at a company as a fresh talent and you are basically, on your own. In today's world we have technology at our finger tips and the ability to film promos and edit primarily on our phones. For example, I used iMovie recently and it really looked great. It's less than $10 for the app and can be used easily on an iPhone. 

Having this luxury is a huge asset but is also a huge risk if not done properly. How many times have you watched a promo done on a phone and felt like "This doesn't look very professional"? I'm sure a lot. 

Here are some tips or tricks to help create some buzz:

Angle - the angle you film the promo can virtually hold the viewers attention a bit longer than a standard, static tripod shot. You can frame exactly what you want in the shot and what you don't want.  Bane looks bad ass...right?

Music - having a track that is upbeat or more or less, tells the story for your character again is a great way to hold the attention span of the viewer and help deliver the message in a positive way and look like you have quality and value, which in turn could net more cash.

Color and Filters - I'm a fan of color correcting or using a built in feature that alters the coloring of the film itself. Raw footage shows a lot of flaws and like noted earlier, the lighting might not be desired. Again, this creates a value and makes you look like a professional. 

I know these are very easy, basic tips but I think most times we feel rushed to "hurry up and get it done" instead of taking a minute and wanting the best result possible. I am in the process of writing a guide that will explain a very in-depth look at Promos from both sides of the camera and how everyone can improve, that will be taught at seminars soon. Peeking in the WWE's Legends House Episode 1

Since day one I have been raving about WWE Network and all footage they have been streaming. We have all heard about the original program titled Legends House. Legends House has been in the can for some time and features some of the greatest WWE veterans and Hall of Famers, mostly known from the popular times of wrestling, the 1980's. 

I will admit, I was extremely hesitant about watching this show. One, we all have to think "well, is this scripted?", or "what if this makes our heroes look really bad?" plus, how will this measure up with the other WWE reality based program Total Divas? Total Divas has become one of my favorite shows...something about seeing some drama behind close doors, even if they might be helped in making stories happen. 

One thing you notice early on, these guys still have some sort of bond of brotherhood. Its great too see guys like Tony Atlas, Hillbilly Jim, Pat Patterson (especially as you see him cook) and Howard Finkle run around a tennis court. Plus, seeing Mean Gene is always a great thing, he is someone I feel like added to the 80's more than he gets credit for. Jimmy Hart experiencing old man bladder and Hacksaw Jim Duggan busting Roddy Piper's balls about a not figuring out a blender. It was a fun first episode, and trust me, I was worried about how these guys would be represented. 

This episode featured an appearance by Hollywood actor, Gary Busey. Busey teaches mediation in a very unorthodox style, then sits and talks with the guys..which creates some tense moments. It was interesting to hear Gary drop an analogy about walking away from the spotlight and Piper quickly spun it around and shut him down. The "spotlight" for them is never off.

The stand out moment was towards the end of the episode that shows how off the wall Roddy Piper is. His inability to sit still and pace like a caged animal. What will happen next? All I can say, I enjoyed this episode and felt like it could be a lot of fun. How much truth will be in the show? Who knows...but I will be watching.

You Should Be Praising Brock Lesnar!

This past Sunday, Wrestlemania 30 created the ultimate buzz. Professional wrestling icon, The Undertaker placed his undefeated record up against The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar and what happened in that match effected more people than you could imagine. 

Let's talk odds for a minute...the more times to the well, the odds increase that the well will run dry. Undertaker was 21-0; beating anyone and everyone and entertaining millions and millions and creating a security blanket that wrestling fans would snuggle up with every year, with no stop in sight...until Sunday.

Now, let's pull back the curtain of Oz and look at realism. So many people claimed "Brock sucks"..."He changed the script"..."Undertaker should've retired undefeated!!"..."He got beat by a part time wrestler!!". Ok, I understand your feelings are hurt...but here goes some facts:

Brock Lesnar is a legitimate bad ass. Brock Lesnar was hand picked by the Undertaker to end the streak. Brock is as much of a part time wrestler as the Undertaker. The streak was meant to be broken and its the Undertaker's right to choose the path of the character. 

An injury occurred, which can happen when two 300lb monster fight each other. The Undertaker received a serious concussion early in the match, causing the Undertaker to be "lost" and dazed a bit. NOW...pay attention, as this is why you should praise Brock instead of hate Brock Lesnar....

Brock was a true professional and helped the Undertaker finish this match. Brock helped guide and protect the Undertaker for the remainder of the match. Brock gave the Undertaker plenty of rest spots, hoping the Undertaker would get his wits about him. If Brock was the monster you make him out be...why would he do this? Why wouldn't he just be reckless and take full advantage of the Undertaker? Because as much as you hate to admit it, Brock Lesnar is a P-R-O-F-E-S-S-I-O-N-A-L thats why. Look at this from a team perspective...they entered this match as a team and worked together. When one wasn't able to finish, the other took up the slack and did the right thing. The match was finished as designed and it sparked massive emotions, as it should. Everyone felt the effect.

His name is Brock Lesnar and HE should be praised!!

Two shows I'm hoping to see on WWE Network

As much of the Network is about today's stars and programming, for old timers like me, it's about reliving my childhood and nostalgia. When I was growing up, wrestling was my life; from grabbing issues of Pro Wrestling Illustrated and The Wrestler at the corner store, to watching countless hours of these larger than life heroes and villains on Saturdays. The whole day revolved around making sure I was near a tv to catch the action. I grew up in upstate New York, so this was my schedule:

10 am - WWF Superstars

11am - World Class Championship Wrestling

6:05 World Championship Wrestling on TBS

This was my holy day…if you will. In the middle I would run to meet my friend Tim, just to discuss the early matches and what would happen on Saturday night. We would try our best to stay up on talent from the companies that we couldn't see and up and coming wrestlers that might show up. Sure, the wrestling magazines helped fuel these incredibly outrageous stories but who cared…for us, we were loving it.

This brings me to what I'm hoping will show up on the Network.

Tuesday Night Titans

By far one of the most ridiculous shows ever about professional wrestling. TNT started on the USA network in 1985 and gave us all a chance to see our favorite wrestlers in and out of the ring. It was set up to resemble a "tonight show" style of interview. Vince McMahon and Lord Alfred Hayes as his sidekick talked with talent, had cooking segments, weddings and more nonsense all in front of a studio audience. 

I watched Kamala eat a live chicken (even though we never saw it), watched a cooking segment with the Wild Samoans, enjoyed Fuji Vice with Mr Fuji and Don Muraco. Two of my favorite segments; Dr D David Schultz home visit and Paul Orndorff teaching people how to work out ("get you hands off me you fat pig!!). Tremendous stuff. I know this was available on the WWE on demand service, so I would like to see this every Tuesday night at 8pm. 

Hulk Hogans Rock and Wrestling

Call me crazy, but this cartoon was a lot of fun. Also, in 1985, timed to coincide with Cyndi Laupers involvement to make this great "Rock and Wrestling" connection, this cartoon just continued to feed off the Wrestlemania hype. 

This show really was just laughs with some good vs evil involved. Wacky situations with some of the best in WWF at the time. This needs to have a place on the network. As a child of the 70's and 80's, everyone loved their morning cartoons…no reason why today could not be the same. I would love to see this have an hour time slot Saturday mornings 9am-10am.

Last night as I drove to another Professional Wrestling event, like I have countless of other times over the past 14 years, I finally realized it was time to walk away. I was given the chance to work in front of some amazing crowds, share a locker room with some of the greatest performers and make some life long friends. I was given knowledge, while at times was able to pass some along. I took and gave, I lived a dream I had ever since my Dad took me to a live event when I was little. 

I'm not bitter, that's not why I decided it was time...it's just time for me too move on. It doesn't mean I still won't hang out, show support and share the laughs, plus help when I can...I have gained a family. It really boils down to me having nothing left to give, my life is shifting...but, I think for the best. I feel the need to focus on my desire to create, to make a statement and to really focus on film making, acting and writing.

On my way to the Dreams Project event in Birdsboro, PA last night, run by my best pal, Steve Corino, I took a few moments to reflect on my "career" (if you can call it that) and felt accomplished. Sure, I never made it to WWE or TNA but I don't think you need to make it there to feel like you achieved a personal goal. I've looked at things a lot differently lately, maybe it's maturity setting in. Goals aren't what others see, it's what you see. Only YOU can decide if you reached your goal.

When I walked in, I went to Corino first and said "Tonight's it"; he just looked for a minute and said "Ok, dick"...haha. He knows it's time for me to move on, he knows my desire is elsewhere and I thank him for giving me the send off I asked him for. I said "I want you to be the last one to get over on me", that set up for 3 of my signature stunner sells....haha...usually awful btw. 

A few of veterans that I truly respect said some kind words, some I've battled with for almost 10 years. I've been spit on, been called everything that you shouldn't be called, been hurt, given up family time, traveled hours upon hours to work for 6 mins and I wouldn't trade anything in. I have no regrets. I have memories.

For about 99.8% of my career, I was a heel. I was the bad guy. Thank you to everyone who ever booed me, to anyone who ever thought I was an asshole...it was YOU that made me smile when I wrote this today. All I can hope, when you read this..you smile too.

Last night while watching Raw, I tweeted about John Cena and was amazed by the negative response. I was inspired to write today, for some it might give you a different opinion, for others, it will spark more hate.

Being in the Professional Wrestling business is a blessing and at times it makes you crazy. I'm on my way out, I'm over the hill and its a young man's sport. When you first get in, you're amazed...the sights, the sounds, the pop or heat you get when you walk through the curtain. It's a high...seriously. I can remember feeling it for days after something special happens.

Sadly, you quickly are turned into being a piece of paper that people tear from all sides. Many times, we remain silent when we see things that people don't understand or are quick to complain about. Which brings me to John Cena...ah yes, the man who carries the WWE and yet gets shit on by the common man. Many can argue my thoughts and theories but if you open your mind and stop worrying about the nonsense, you will enjoy the show much, much more. 

*  The common complaint from the fans is - "John Cena is superman..he never loses!" Ok, lets take a look at that statement. John Cena sell more merchandise than ANYONE in the WWE. An insider told me how much money he brings in on his likeness alone, which was staggering. Cena is the flagship of WWE, much like a Hulk Hogan was...it's hard to find someone with that much charisma to carry a company, seriously. John Cena also is an ambassador for Make a Wish and Special Needs kids, World Wide. He single handly is responsible for granting over 300 wishes for sick and dying kids. WWE has millions invested in Cena, why destroy someone who does so much?

Also, after a year of build up...John Cena LOSES to the Rock on WWE biggest stage, Wrestlemania. He loses clean to an actor. Which, might I point out, that you also complained about. No one expected Cena to get beat by the Rock, who we all know is a part time player in the company and WILL be back in the title picture come Wrestlemania again, and chances are..you'll complain about that too.

* Next complaint - "John Cena should never have beaten Brock!". Ok, think about this for a minute, if Lesnar beats Cena...then who does Brock face?? Who else would stop him? Punk? I love Punk but, seriously, Punk gives up 60 pounds easily to Lesnar. Plus, don't you enjoy the "Best in the World" programs that Punk did with Daniel Bryan? Guess what, Lesnar faces Punk, he kills all of that...the Punk momentun train stops instantly and then you have a UFC proving to everyone that Wrestling is a big work and wrestlers are less superior than UFC...way to go arm chair bookers. Way to destroy the company.

Instead Lesnar goes with HHH and neither lose steam. In fact, the program with HHH made him look stronger! Cena floats in and out of the title picture but continues to support the CM Punk angle. I think, Cena is used perfect. He creates PPV buys, sells merchandise and puts guys over.

* Last complaint - "Does Cena have to headline ever PPV?" As you can see above, there is a reason why he headlines PPV's...he sells tickets. WWE is a business...and more importantly, an Entertainment business! Their goal is too make money...to continue to stay in business so that you have something to complain about every Monday night. More often than not, the people who complain the loudest are the same wrestling fans who stream the PPV's, don't buy and merchaindise and wait for the latest DVD set to end up on Netflix. 

Until someone else steps up to take over the WWE, John Cena is your Captain...you can sit and enjoy yourself or sit and bitch. When I see Cena roll out of the ring to go hug a special needs kid, that too me equals class. Remember, you watch an invisible kid each week get fist bumped and actually get hurt...you watch a psycho twenty something as the GM of RAW. You watch Mae Youngs Hand on the 1000th episode (I know I laughed) and you complain about "It's not real?"

Just my opinion. Now, I'm gonna go buy myself a John Cena shirt and support the cause. He's steering the ship and I'm on board. My name is Rob Dimension and I have Risen Above Hate.

"Superfights" is a Martial Arts Masterpiece!

You ever stumble upon a movie that, only You talk about, so you try to tell more people just to share the sheer awesomeness? Me too!! That's my plan with this review...I plan to hype this film so huge, that once you watch it, you will want a Jack Cody Tattoo or maybe wish that Superfights was on TV weekly.

For years, growing up in the 80's I was glued to the television every Saturday afternoon, watching Shaw Brother's Kung Fu theater, then through the power of VHS, watching Enter the Ninja, Gymkata and even No Retreat, No Surrender (which has never been released on Dvd and IS a real crime). The fast paced, high energy martial artists, kicking, punching with the "smack" sound effect and story lines that seemed like backdrops for the action was why I loved those movies. The outrageous, ridiculousness of the punch power of the Boy with the Golden Arm or superfeats of the Crippled Masters (yes, you bet your ass I have this movie) was what movie magic was all about. You know the stories of the pupil that always wants to surpass the master....actually that sounds like almost every movie I enjoy! (I really need therapy)

Fast forward to 1995 and a 25 yr old, young Dimension is up late at night, flipping the channels of cable tv and I stumble upon this movie, the movie that inspired this write up, Superfights. I quickly look for the next showing because I HAVE to record this on a VHS tape. Using a book they called "The TV Guide", I set my VCR to record and everything is set. For the next several years I'm able to watch this throwback to corny, zany Karate action and I love every minute of it.

Let me give you the synopsis : Simple box boy Jack Cody is a karate dreamer. On his way home, Jack prevents a mugging and is thrust into stardom, instantly. Being offered a contract into the "Superfights", quite honestly, likened to WWE, that is all glitz and fame...on the outside. Cody quickly realizes it's an underground world of crime, drugs and a battle of good and evil.

That synopsis does not do this film any justice. With a really fimilar cast of Martial Arts veterans of 80's Kung Fu films, plus an appearance of a very young former ECW, WWE star Rob Van Dam and International Wrestling star Jim Steele (yep, Jungle Jim) this movie delivers on the action....and the cheese. Steroid usage, sex, shake downs of business owners and low level drug dealers (oh yeah...I said Shake Down) from this crooked Superfights promoter (geez, this kind of sounds like the Vince McMahin story) all make Superfights a plethera of happiness. Clearly not meant to be a comedy, it comes across so silly but for me, that's the charm for this movie.

From the amazing Kung Fu elderly master (all I could think of was Remo Williams) to the outlandish fellow super fighters. The fight scenes are what makes this movie so good, I'm serious about this. This movie is a must see! I wish I could could find Brandon Gaines, the lead, who only did this and not really anything else after, to sign my dvd.

 

Keep in mind, this movie will not be for everyone. In fact, I might be the only one this movie is for, but if you remember the action flicks that were built around fun, then you might really enjoy this one. It's a winner!!
